Spots are still open for Mount Airy High School’s 15th annual summer volleyball camp. The camp will be held from July 9 through 11 at the school.
The camp is designed for players to learn the fundamentals of volleyball and strengthen the skills they currently possess. It will focus on basic and advanced skills, competitions, team play and individual instruction will be offered as well. It is open to all rising 6th through 9th graders, and will be held each day from 9 a.m. to noon in the gym at Mount Airy High School.
MAHS head volleyball coach Chuck Morris is the Camp Director, and MAHS junior varsity head coach Amy Balthis will serve as the Assistant Camp Director. Other staff members will include current and former volleyball players for Mount Airy High School.
Morris is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Lady Bears. Under his leadership, the once-struggling program has won 58 matches in the past three seasons, including a Northwest 1A Conference championship in 2015 and a 23-win season in 2016. The Lady Bears have made the state playoffs in all five seasons he has directed the program. Several Lady Bears have gone on to play collegiately during this time. He has coached USA Juniors Club Volleyball for more than 30 years and is also a certified referee for the NCAA, USA Volleyball and the NCHSAA.
In addition to her duties as the Lady Bears’ JV coach, Balthis has coached a local Junior Olympics volleyball team for the past six seasons.
