Dobson native honored by academy


Samuel Freeman, a native of Dobson, was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Saturday, Oct. 7 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Freeman was a 1968 graduate of Surry Central High School where he was quarterback of the 1965 state championship football team. He received his Bachelor and Law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his PhD from Harvard University.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 and is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. It provides advice to government, academia and the private sector.

Dr. Freeman, professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, is one of seven fellows in the field of philosophy and religion to be inducted this year.

He is the son of the late Judge and Mrs. Frank Freeman of Dobson
