KING — East Surry volleyball beat West Stokes at home, but couldn’t finish off the Wildcats on the road.
The Lady Cardinals lost in the fifth set 15-8 in their only match this week.
“I thought we played the majority of the game with little to no energy,” said coach Caleb Gilley. “We did not do a good job blocking.” tonight. hard time closing.
The Cards needed overtime to take the first set, going all the way to 29-27 to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the Cards dropped the next two sets to face defeat at 2-1.
“At times we made some good runs off some very good serving,” said Gilley, but the squad couldn’t finish either set.
West Stokes won the second set 25-18 and then the third 25-16.
Like the first set, the Cards went deep into the game to win the fourth set 27-25.
Unfortunately, that momentum didn’t carry over to the final set.
East Surry had won four matches in a row until falling to Bishop last week. Now back-to-back losses drops East to 7-5 overall.
Sophomore Bethany Clayton had a big game for the Cards. She posted 18 kills, 13 digs and 11 assists.
Sarah Marion had 12 digs, six kills and four aces.
Cameron Sloop had 12 digs, three blocks and two kills.
Bryce Smith led the defense with 26 digs, while Haley Whitaker added 11.
Kendall Beck led the team with six blocks. Sydney Marion had three blocks to go with three kills.
Sami Marion had 14 assists. Alyssa Jessup made five kills. Elise Hayes had three aces.
As for being off the rest of the week, Gilley said the team was supposed to play Winston-Salem Prep, but the academy isn’t fielding a team this season, which left two empty holes in the schedule for the home/away series.
The Cards next host Mount Airy a week from today.
