The Mount Airy volleyball team relied on composure and balance to come from behind and defeat the Elkin Elks on Tuesday night.
The Granite Bears (1-0) lost the first set 25-22, but they came roaring back and won the next three sets to clinch a victory in their season opener, 3-1.
“We played with a lot of maturity tonight,” Mount Airy coach Chuck Morris said. “In the past we’ve played with some stress in these tight spots, but the girls responded well.”
Mount Airy’s setter, Sarah Lankford, spread the wealth to her attackers at the net. Lankford supplied 35 assists and four different Granite Bears recorded at least eight kills.
Sophomore Madeline Mayfield led the team with nine and provided a clutch kill in the crucial 26-24 third set victory.
The other Bears with at least eight kills were Katie Hicks, Sadie Brooks and Megan Flemming.
Coach Morris believes his team could have performed better in the serve and serve-return departments, but he will take the early season victory.
“A win is a win and it’s a good way to start,” Morris said. “We didn’t take advantage of all our opportunities but the girls played well and it showed how hard they worked all summer.”
