Mount Airy will hold open tryouts for its volleyball team on Monday and Tuesday.
The volleyball team has kept busy, even before tryouts, as those interested in the team have taken part in several scrimmages. The Lady Bears have hosted four events and attended a scrimmage at both North Surry and Alleghany.
Any girls interested in playing varsity or JV volleyball must attend at least one of the two tryouts, said head coach Chuck Morris. The sessions are 9-11:30 a.m. on both days.
“The Lady Bears will be hosting two formal scrimmages with paid, uniformed officials,” said Morris.
The first scrimmage will be Aug. 10 at home with Wilkes Central, Patrick County and Surry Central at 6 p.m. with both varsity and JV teams participating.
On Aug. 11 the Bears will five more teams starting at 9 a.m. Taking part will be West Forsyth, North Wilkes, Starmount, Davie County and last year’s 4A state runner-up in Reagan.
The format for that Friday will be pool play with each team playing each other two 25-point sets starting at 5 pts, followed by seeded bracket play. Play will have a match on the hour with two courts in the main gym and one court in the old junior high gym. Teams will have a 45-minute lunch break around noon.
Coach Morris said he is extremely excited for the Friday scrimmages because of the high quality of the competition.
