Rain plays havoc with schedules again

Staff Report

Another day of bad weather led to another round of cancellations and postponements for local sports teams on Monday, with the heavy storms also putting some of Tuesday’s events in jeopardy, depending on what playing conditions are like this evening.

The fourth Northwest 1A Conference golf match of the season, scheduled for Monday evening at Winston Lake Golf Course in Winston-Salem, was rescheduled to today. The NW1A golf season is roughly at the halfway point, with defending conference, regional and state champion Mount Airy in the lead, but both Bishop McGuinness and East Surry nipping at their heels.

The second showdown of the season between county rivals East Surry and Surry Central in soccer was postponed to today at 5:30 at Central. The baseball teams of those two schools moved their game to April 13, with the JV to start at 4:30 and the varsity to follow. The East vs. Central JV game scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled.

In addition to Monday’s delays, make-up dates were announced for a few of the games that were rained out last week.

Surry Central will make up two games against South Stokes on April 12 and 18. The first game will be at Central and the second one at Walnut Cove, with both to start at 6 p.m. The Lady Eagles will make up their game with Mount Airy on Wednesday, when they will play a doubleheader against the Lady Bears on the MA field starting at 4:30 p.m. The scheduled game at Central on April 11 will not be played.

East Surry and Surry Central will make up their softball game on Saturday, with the varsity to begin at noon.

The bad weather is also having a severe effect on scheduling for middle school sports in the area. Following on the heels of several postponements last week, the local middle school conference track meet scheduled for Monday at North Stokes, along with a Mount Airy Middle tennis match, were both postponed to today.
