DOBSON — The East Surry girls’ tennis team downed county rival Surry Central in both teams’ opening match of the 2016 season, taking a 7-2 victory on Monday.
Five out of the six singles matches were two-set affairs, with the only match to go the distance coming from the No. 1 seed battle between East Surry’s Haley Jennelle and Surry Central’s Sarah Wyble. Jennelle earned a tight victory by a score of 7-6, 2-6, (12-10).
Abigail Martin kept things rolling for the Lady Cardinals out of the No. 2 seed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hope Hinson. The other two singles winners from East Surry were No. 5 Haley Gilley and No. 6 Carson Payne. Gilley defeated Mamie Smith 6-0, 6-2, and Payne registered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Haily Robertson.
Surry Central was able to get in the win column with victories from No. 3 Hannah Pardue and No. 4 Sarah Marion. Pardue needed two tight set victories to beat Klaudia Tucker 7-6, 7-5. Marion bested Sarah Mann with a 6-4, 6-3 result.
East Surry swept the doubles portion of the match with relative ease. Jenelle and Martin combined to beat Wyble and Hinson 8-3. Tucker and Mikayla Manuel defeated Pardue and Marion 8-5 with Mann and Payne finishing things off with an 8-4 victory over Smith and Robertson.
The Lady Cardinals will return to the courts on Wednesday with their first match of the home season coming against West Stokes. Surry Central travels to Elkin on Thursday for its next match.
