Lady Cards split two tennis matches

Staff Report

KERNERSVILLE — East Surry went against two of the best tennis teams in the Northwest Conference and came away 1-1.

The Lady Cardinals beat North Stokes 7-2 on Tuesday, then lost to the defending state champions of Bishop McGuinness 6-3 on Thursday.

The Lady Villains return the Auger sisters and Anna Petrangeli from last year’s 1A title team. Those three players accounted for three singles wins and two doubles wins.

However, East Surry won three of the other four matches and came close in the other one.

Fifth seed Mikayla Manuel won 7-5, 6-2 against Melanie Vynalek. Sixth seed Haley Jennelle won 6-2, 6-2 over Candyce Sturgeon.

The Cards could have evened the match at 3-all going into doubles if the fourth seed could have pulled out a close one.

Klaudia Tucker lost the first set 2-6, but bounced back with a much better second set and forced a 6-6 tie, said East coach Ashley Powell. The tiebreaker went to 7-5 before Claire Rogers could secure the team point.

Powell said she was impressed with the way the underclassman came back to force that tiebreaker.

The coach said that Jennelle trailed at the start of both sets, but she was able to figure out what she was doing wrong and then corrected it.

Manuel, the coach said, “was quite on fire.” She controlled the ball and forced the opponents to play her style of game.

Then in doubles, Powell added, “she and Aibgail (Martin) make for a dynamic duo.”

Manuel got her second team point when she and Martin teamed up to beat Vynalek and Ally Dabar 8-2.

Even though the top three seeds didn’t get a win in singles or doubles, none of the matches were shutouts.

Tiffany King fell to Morgan Auger, the returning player of the year, but did win three games at 6-2, 6-1.

Makayla Keener lost to Petrangeli. Powell said she didn’t have that exact score written down yet.

Third seed Allie Hawks lost to Becky Auger 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, King and Keener lost 10-5 to Morgan Auger/Petrangeli. Hawks and Tucker lost 10-4 to Becky Auger/Rogers.
