The East Surry girls’ tennis has played second fiddle to Mount Airy in the Northwest Conference for a long time, but this year’s team is hoping to change things.
The Cardinals (4-0, 1-0) kept their early-season momentum rolling into conference play on Thursday with another 9-0 sweep, this time over Walkertown in the Northwest season opener.
East Surry is not only undefeated on the year, but it has yet to drop a match in singles or doubles to start the season.
In its match against the Lady Wolfpack, East Surry only lost four games total, and four out of the six singles’ matches against Walkertown were sweeps for the Cards.
Makayla Keener, Allie Hawks, Mikayla Manuel and Haley Jennelle were all dominant for East Surry with 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Tiffany King continued her stellar play as the one seed to start the season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Klaudia Tucker posted the same line in her win as the fourth seed.
The Cardinals were just as impressive in the doubles’ portion. King and Keener combined for an 8-1 win, and Hawks and Tucker matched them with the identical score.
Manuel teamed up with Abigail Martin to provide East Surry with an 8-0 shutout in the third-seed doubles’ match.
The Cardinals will face off against rival North Surry on Monday afternoon.
