HAYS — The Mount Airy girls’ soccer team avenged an earlier loss this season on Wednesday.
After losing to North Wilkes 4-1 in the second game of the year, the Lady Bears bounced back to defeat the Vikings 2-1 on Wednesday with both goals coming from Allie Sechrist.
“I’m just very excited for my kids. They played really hard and with a young team, it’s good to see the improvement,” Mount Airy coach Will Hurley said.
Sechrist’s first goal came late in the first half off an assist from Kora Ledezma. She followed that up with a goal midway through the second half, this time from captain Judy Madrigal.
“We’ve been working on Allie’s position and turning. We’re trying to encourage her to not just stand there and wait for it, but to be aggressive and to go for the ball,” Hurley said.
The Mount Airy coach also singled out the performances of Jessica Miranda, Haley France, Baylee Greenwood and Ana Contreras. Goalkeeper Ailia Halpern made 10 saves in the victory.
After losing its first two games, Mount Airy now has two wins and a tie in its last three contests. The Lady Bears will try to keep this stretch of solid play going on Friday in a home game against North Surry.
