KING — The Lady Cardinals of East Surry picked up another non-conference win against West Stokes on Saturday afternoon. Caleb Gilley and his squad improved to an overall 9-6 mark after defeating the Wildcats 51-20.
After the first quarter of play, East Surry took the lead, 12-5. Haley Jennelle struck first with a quick basket for the Lady Cardinals. Maddi Pennington then followed with a jumper of her own. Madison Bowman and Katlyn Creed swished a 3-pointer each, all before the four-minute mark in the first. East Surry led 10-0 before the home team made its first basket of the game. However, the Lady Cardinals cooled off after that, getting only a basket from Cheyanne Fresch the rest of the quarter,
Only two Lady Cardinals score in the second quarter, but even so, they still put up five more points than the Wildcats. Pennington collected a basket, and also went to the free-throw line line on six different occasions, where she added seven more points. Bethany Clayton also tallied her first two points in the game, and East Surry led 23-11 at the half.
There was no score for over a minute heading into the third quarter for either team. Pennington was fouled heading to the rim and collected a free throw to start the quarter, and nearly two minutes later, she would earn the next Lady Cardinal score, another successful trip to the line where she added two more points. Tara Beck was found under the hoop and obtained a quick layup. Pennington finished the quarter with another jump shot and a free throw. Sarah Mann collected her first basket of the night as the third ended. Kaila Speaks drained a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left, which increased the lead to 36-15 going into the final eight minutes of play. West Stokes scored only four points in the entire quarter.
Beck opened the fourth quarter by weaving through a multitude of Lady Wildcats in the paint. Pennington added five points within 30 seconds of Beck’s score. Clayton was 2-for-4 from the line and would later score again. Two minutes into the quarter, West Stokes picked up its first of three baskets. Clayton executed on the fast break with a steal and a layup for a score. The Lady Cards reached a 30-point lead from another Pennington make. Jennelle would be the last Cardinal to score to finish out the game.
East Surry defeated West Stokes for the second time this season. The first matchup was a 60-19 win.
East Surry will travel to North Stokes on Friday in hopes of earning another conference win.
