Basketball, although not of the high school variety, will resume on the day after Christmas at Mount Airy High School.
Mount Airy’s annual Alumni Games will be played on that afternoon, with a new twist this year. Not only will the past Granite Bear and Lady Granite Bear heroes be looking to relive past glory, they’ll also be helping MAHS athletic director and coach Donald Price to put a Bear-worthy beating on cancer.
Price, who heads up the schools athletic department and is also an assistant coach on the football team, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and his treatments will incur significant expenses for the family.
“We were planning the alumni games, and then we found out about his cancer and decided it would be great for us to raise some money for him,” said event organizer Misty Boyer. “This will hopefully help him with the medical bills.”
Admission to the games will be free, but donations for Coach Price will be accepted, and a concession stand will be in operation and all profits will go to the Price family.
The Lady Bear alumni will take to the court at 4:30 p.m., with a team of Surry Central alumni providing the competition. The men’s alumni team will play at 5:30 against the current Granite Bears. Several current and past coaches for the two schools will also be taking part in the event.
Anyone who would like to make a donation to help the Price family in their fight with cancer may contact Tammy Delp at (336) 970-0158 for more information.
