Bouma to sell shirts at Mount Airy

Staff Report

Mount Airy senior Taylor Bouma will be selling t-shirts for his senior project at Friday’s basketball game between the Granite Bears and the North Surry Greyhounds.

Bouma’s senior project is on “Childhood Cancer Awareness,” and the money he raises on Friday will benefit the Brenner Children’s Oncology Department.

The shirts themselves cost $10 and say “Join the Fight. Support Childhood Cancer Awareness.” Bouma ordered 200 t-shirts and will be selling them in front of the gymnasium. Whatever shirts he doesn’t sell will also be available within the following couple of weeks.

Bouma himself fought Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone cancer, over the past year. He was pronounced cancer-free on Aug. 17, and his battle with the disease motivated him to take on this topic for his senior project.

“We had to pick our senior projects during our junior year,” Bouma said. “After I was diagnosed, our teacher said to pick something that was close to you and that you were passionate about.”
