The Mount Airy Country Club held its annual Member/Member Golf Tournament last weekend, with the team of Brad Dorsett and Mitch Mabe running away with the overall title in the Championship Flight.
The duo shot a 67 on each day of the tournament, and their two-day aggregate of 134 beat runners-up Justin Freeman and Scottie Payne by seven strokes. There were just three rounds over the course of the two days where the golfers broke 70, and Dorsett and Mabe had two of them.
A total of 15 teams competed in the event over the 3,075-yard, par-35 course. Eighteen-hole events at MACC are always held with the golfers playing all nine holes twice. In the Member/Member, the players played 18 holes, with the top four after day one assigned to the Championship Flight. The next five made up the First Flight, and the final six after day one were in the Second Flight.
The winners of the First Flight, Ronnie Joyce and Johnny Solomon, actually had the third-best score in the tournament overall. After missing the cut for the championship by one stroke, Joyce and Solomon shot one-under 69 on day two for a total score of 142, beating Derrick Chilton and Bryan Cox by four shots to win the flight.
A strong showing by Chad Beasley and Jim Walser on day two allowed them to win the Second Flight by four shots as well. They shot 77-73 — 150, beating Brad Boyd and Mason Chaney by four.
Rounding out the Championship Flight were Darian Byrd/Bryon Kennedy (72-72 — 144) and Jon Cawley/Lane Hawks (72-79 — 151).
The rest of the First Flight included Mark Fletcher/Nathan Fletcher (76-72 — 148), Donnie Marion/Bo Miller (76-74 — 150), and Robbie Gardner/Jed Norman (76-78 — 154). Phillip Clement and Jimmy Inman finished third in the Second Flight with a score of 80-77 — 157. The other teams in that flight included Phil Bowers/Terry McCann, Roscoe Easter/Andy Plum and Bill Edwards/Jay Sherrill.
Awards for closest to the pin were awarded each day. The hole for Saturday was 3/12, and Joyce won the contest. On Sunday, the prize hole was 7/16, and Easter won.
