WILSON — The East Surry 12-and-under Little League All Stars are one win away from a state championship.
After winning the District 2 tournament in late June to qualify, East Surry traveled here and opened play in the state tournament on Friday. The local sluggers trounced Transylvannia with a 14-1 victory to advance into the second round.
Their next game was significantly more difficult, but East Surry survived and advanced with a 6-5 win against Coulwood-Oakdale. That result placed East Surry in the semi finals, and the good times kept rolling with a 14-4 win over Boiling Springs to reach the final.
East Surry will have to wait a couple of days and let the rest of the bracket battle it out to determine who else is represented in the championship.
Boiling Springs, Bull City and Greenville North Slate are the other three teams remaining. Bull City faced North Slate Monday night, and the winner of that game will meet Boiling Springs on Tuesday.
Whoever survives will need to beat East Surry twice because of the tournament’s double-elimination format.
East Surry will have a chance to win the championship on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Wilson. If East Surry loses that game, the rematch will take place Thursday at 6 p.m. The winner of this tournament qualifies for the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Georgia, where a trip to Williamsport, Pennsylvania and the Little League World Series is on the line.
