DOBSON — A record 110 boys and girls gathered at Surry Central High School for the annual Eagles Nest Basketball Camp.

Campers were divided by age and gender into four divisions. Rising third to fifth grade boys were in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while girls of the same age made up the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Rising sixth through ninth grade boys made up the National Basketball Association (NBA) and rising sixth through ninth grade girls were placed in the Women’s National Basketball Association.

Surry Central varsity basketball coaches Mandy Holt and Myles Wilmoth ran the camp with assistance from their coaching staff, the coaching staff of Central Middle School’s basketball programs, and their players.

Wilmoth reported that each camper received more than seven hours of individualized training as part of the four-day camp. Additionally, campers engaged in team activities and participated in more than 20 games each.

On the camp’s final day, campers competed in four individual competitions as well as the finals to the team competition in each division. The individual competitions were: knockout, free throw, one-on-one (a king of the court style where the winner builds points), and hot shot (camper have 30 seconds to build points off shots from different locations on the court).

Each division also named a camper for the Hustler Award, Mr. or Ms. Station Award (for performing exceptionally during each individual workout station), and the Camper Award.
