MATTHEWS — The Surry North 10U All-Stars ended an impressive run in the North Carolina Cal Ripken Baseball state tournament this weekend.
Surry North, which placed second to Equip Sports in its regional tournament over the July 4 weekend in Boone, advanced to the Western North Carolina state championships starting on Friday.
The state tournament, held at Arthur Goodman Park in Matthews, saw the team join 11 others from around the state in pool play. Surry North beat South Charlotte 11-6 and Davidson 6-4, but lost 13-2 to East Rowan. The 2-1 mark was enough for the team to advance to the final eight of the tournament, which was contested with a single-elimination format.
Unfortunately, this meant another date with the team that had given them so much trouble the week before. Equip Sports, which went 2-1 in another bracket of pool play, was Surry North’s first opponent, and beat them 11-0 on their way to the championship round, where they were scheduled to face the only other team that beat Surry North, East Rowan, on Monday and Tuesday in a best-of-3 series.
Surry South 10U also qualified for the state tournament, but didn’t get out of pool play. They had to open with host Matthews, and lost 15-2 in their opener. However, they might have moved on if they had been able to pull out their second game, a 13-12 slugfest that saw Pineville take the one-run victory. Surry South bounced back to beat East Catawba 6-2 that night, but it wasn’t enough to advance.
All four of Surry North’s teams actually made the state championship tournament.
In the 12U division, contested in Clemmons, Surry North was the only local team to earn a berth. The team posted a 1-2 record in pool play, losing its opener 14-2 to the 12U version of Equip Sports. On Saturday, they lost 11-9 to Davidson County, but finished pool play with a 10-0 blowout of Waxhaw. This win was enough to also send them to the single-elimination round, where they lost 6-3 to China Grove in their opener.
The 11U division, played at Falls Creek Elementary School in East Bend, saw both Surry North and Surry South make the state tournament, but neither team got out of the opening rounds. There was no pool play, in favor of a double-elimination bracket. Surry North lost its opener 17-5 to Southwest Forsyth, while Surry South fell 8-1 to Matthews. In the elimination bracket, Waxhaw knocked out both local teams, beating Surry South 5-3 and then downing Surry North 11-0.
The 9U teams played at Jennings Park in Statesville. Surry North went 2-1 in pool play to reach the round of eight before bowing out in a loss to Matthews. They lost their opener 15-4 to Matthews in pool play, but then held off Davidson County 11-10 and beat North Piedmont 16-4 to earn a trip to the single-elimination round. Unfortunately, this meant another game with Matthews, and that team had their number, winning the rematch 15-5.
