Part three of a three-part series that reviews the Surry County sports year one season at a time. These pictures captured the excitement and electricity of athletics at North Surry, East Surry, Surry Central, and Mount Airy high schools.
Spring sports began in February despite the weather remaining winter-esque through April. But this didn’t stop local athletes from making their triumphant return to their respective fields of play. Boys and girls traded places between the tennis courts, golf course, and the soccer field, baseball and softball teams shined bright on the diamond, and track and field athletes jumped, threw, and ran all over the competition.
Surry Central’s Sarah Brown set a new 2A state record for the women’s pole vault at the NCHSAA State Championship meet.
Ryan Eldridge of North Surry not only won his second shot put state championship of the year in May, but he set a new 2A state record and out-threw the 4A state champion on the way.
The East Surry Cardinals’ golf team won the Northwest 1A Conference Championship and sent two golfers to the state championship. Landon Barnes (middle) tied for the best score in the state from a traditional school.
