Because of the threat of heavy rain on Friday, local schools have moved their dates for football games.

The Weather Channel website said Wednesday evening that thunderstorms could reach Mount Airy around midnight to 1 a.m. Friday morning. The chance of rain isn’t expected to drop below 60 percent all day long.

With fields expected to be a soggy mess, athletic directors have switched days.

The big matchup of the week is North Surry hosting East Surry. North head coach Danny Lyons reported on social media Wednesday that the game would be played Thursday with a 7 p.m. kickoff. “Come out and support your team!”

The Greyhounds did not have a soccer game scheduled for Thursday, so no schedule juggling was necessary for head coach Eric Jessup.

Mount Airy will be traveling to Elkin Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game, according to a post on social media from Tommy Morrison, the voice of Bears football on WPAQ Radio.

Surry Central athletic director Myles Wilmoth said the varsity team will travel to Wilkes Central on Monday for a 7 p.m. battle of the Eagles. The two JV squads will play in Dobson on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
