MURPHY — A 285-mile bus trip? Is that all you got?

Mount Airy’s volleyball team made local teams a perfect 3-for-3 in second-round volleyball action on Thursday, marching on into Saturday’s round of 16 with an easy 25-23, 25-14, 25-18 victory over Smoky Mountain Conference co-champion Hiwassee Dam. The Lady Bears had dismissed the league’s other co-champion, Blue Ridge Early College Academy, the day before.

Mount Airy (23-5) duly earned a date with the top seed in their half of the West draw, South Stanly, on Saturday in Norwood. The Rowdy Rebel Bulls, champions of the Uwharrie Athletic 1A, are 25-3 this season, ranked No. 3 in the state among 1A teams by (Mount Airy is 10th), and defeated Robbinsville and Lincoln Charter in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Lady Bears coach Chuck Morris had been confident that his team could handle the long bus ride to Hiwassee Dam (15-8) and still arrive in good playing form. The Lady Eagles, who were the fourth seed in the bracket, hung right with Mount Airy in the first set but the Lady Bears pulled it out, and then took full control from that point on, ending in the match in not much more than an hour.
