WINSTON-SALEM — Mount Airy volleyball coach Chuck Morris thought his team could sneak up on people early in the season. Morris knew his team had talent, but he wasn’t quite sure if anyone else realized how good the Lady Bears could be.
On Thursday night, Morris and his squad traveled to Winston-Salem and returned home with a conference championship. A 3-0 rout over second place Bishop McGuinness sealed the Northwest Conference title, and was the exclamation point on a sneaky good year.
The Granite Bears swept aside the Villains 26-24, 25-19, 25-20. The win improves their record to 18-1 and a perfect 10-0 in the conference.
Mount Airy has one game remaining in league play against East Surry before the conference tournament and eventual playoffs.
The Lady Bears will be in action this weekend against North Surry and Surry Central in the “Rivals United Dig Pink” tournament.
