Boys’ Soccer

Surry Central 9 East Surry 0

Surry Central was one of the last soccer teams in the area to begin its season, but the Golden Eagles are off and running in 2015.

Surry Central (1-0) started the year in style with a 9-0 whipping over the East Surry Cardinals on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles were led by Brayan Gomez and Arturo Lopez on the evening. Gomez supplied his team with a hat trick, and Lopez chipped in three assists.

For East Surry, its already the third loss of the season and the Cardinals are still searching for their first victory. However, there could be room for optimism. Last year’s team that made it to the state final didn’t record its first win until the seventh game.

Next up for Surry Central is a date with Elkin on Saturday, while the Cardinals will turn their attention to their next match on Monday against Alleghany.

Mount Airy 3 North Wilkes 0

With a balanced attack and team effort, the Granite Bears remained undefeated on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over North Wilkes

Mount Airy (2-0) took the first set 25-22 and flexed its muscle throughout the rest of the match. The Granite Bears won the second set 25-16, and they claimed the final set 25-12.

Mount Airy head coach Chuck Morris lauded his team’s effort and its cohesion in its second match of the year. Morris’ squad only committed four service errors.

However, the Granite Bears were also dominant at the net, recording 24 blocks. Four players recorded at least seven kills, and Sarah Lankford provided 27 assists.

Coach Morris and Mount Airy’s next match is Tuesday afternoon at Ashe County High School.
