Basic choices

Rev. Tim Burton

The Green Bay Packers in 1958 were a terrible football team. They had the worst record of any Packer team in history 1-10-1. In 1959 the Packers hired Coach Vince Lombardi and it is told that he stood in front of the team that first year and said, “Men we have to get back to basics.” He then held up a football and stated, “Gentlemen this is a football.”

The rest is history of this legendary coach who led the Packers to six NFL championships (two Super Bowl wins) in nine seasons. He did this by returning to basics.

We read in the scriptures that Jesus said, He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Jesus wants His followers to experience the joys of living for Him and what it means to be a child of God in this world that we live in today. If we are to experience this abundant life, which God desires for us, then we have to make a choice to follow the basics of a Christian life. What are some basic choices we must make?

We must choose Jesus as our Savior. This is the most important and greatest choice we will ever make. The Bible teaches us there is no other name under heaven that we must choose to be saved. Jesus also taught, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me,” in John 14:6.

If you have never made a deliberate choice to receive Jesus as your savior then today please make this most basic choice so you can experience the abundant life now and after life ends on earth.

We must choose the Bible as our manual for daily living. The Bible is sometimes called Life’s operators manual. When we read and study the Bible we can see that God has given us everything we need to know about how to handle any and every situation we will be faced with in life. The Bible says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3: 16. We must read and study the scriptures daily for directions on how to live a life that pleases the Lord and that He can bless abundantly. The basic choice for living an abundant life is making the Bible our manual for living.

We must choose to start our day with the Lord. Many people jump up in the morning and just have time to get ready and make it to work or school. Then we wonder why our days just do not seem to go right. It is because we failed to start it off with God squarely in the center of our day.

Let us be reminded that this does not mean that nothing will ever go wrong because we are still living in a sin-filled world. It does encourage us that when we spend time with the Lord, at the beginning of our day, that no matter what situations we face He will give us what we need to overcome them. The Psalmist shares about his time with God at the beginning of the day when he wrote, “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Psalm 5: 3” Choosing to begin our day with the Lord will help us experience the abundant life.

We have looked this today at three basic choices we must make if we are to experience the abundant life the Lord desires for His children. I challenge each one of us to make these basic choices today. (Next week we will look at three more).
