July 4 cookout open to all

Volunteers with Maranatha Homeless Outreach serve the community at a free Independence Day cookout in Winston-Salem last year.

Maranatha Homeless Outreach will be hosting a July 4 cookout in Mount Airy today for the homeless or hungry.

“Anyone is welcome,” said Penny Rinehart, a Maranatha volunteer. “There will be a lot of food, hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and pop.”

The free event will be held in the parking lot at LSL Auto Sales at 907 W. Pine St., from 12-3 p.m.

In addition to the food, gospel singers will be performing, and preachers and prayer warriors will be available.

Organizers Stephanie Spaie and Josh Carico have been collecting donations for the event over the past few weeks. On Saturday, the duo will be “grilling on the spot,” Rinehart said.

Established for 10 years, the Maranatha ministry serves a meal on W. Pine St. every Friday during the year, and on Easter and Christmas make Easter baskets and collect donations of toys and food as well as serving meals.

The group is also active at The Bethesda Center, a shelter on Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem, and will be serving an Independence Day meal there as well.
