Armed robber strikes Walgreens

An armed robber struck Walgreens in Mount Airy Thursday night and remains at large today, according to the city police department.

Officers from both the Mount Airy Police Department and Surry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the store at 2069 Rockford St. at 9:20 p.m. Thursday.

Employees reported that a man entered the business, displayed a weapon and demanded pills from the pharmacy.

Police have not indicated what he might have taken from the store. No injuries were reported as a result of the robbery.

The suspect is described as a white male; 5 feet, 10 inches tall; and weighing 215-plus pounds.

He is believed to be 40 years of age or older. At the time of the robbery, the man was wearing a flannel shirt over a light-blue shirt, tan cargo shorts, white tennis shoes and a light-green ball cap.

He exited the store through the main entrance and left the area in an unknown direction.

A police department spokesperson said today that no arrest has been made in the case, for which the public’s help is being enlisted.
