Relay for Life Surry County is hosting a Survivor’s Dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers.

“It’s a celebration of survivors,” said Dara Parsons, 2018 volunteer chairman for Relay for Life. “We give them a catered meal. The room is decorated, and we have a guest speaker.”

Parsons did not want to divulge the name of this year’s speaker, giving only the hint that the speaker is also a cancer survivor.

“Survivors who attend can also get their survivor’s shirts,” added Parsons, and there will be an opportunity to register for relay.”

Last year 175 cancer survivors and caretakers attended the dinner. This year, the dinner will be at Faith Baptist Church, 125 Faith Baptist Church Way on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Parsons said cancer survivors who would like to attend will need to call to reserve for the dinner ahead of time and RSVP by July 27 by calling 336-834-3354.

“I’ve sent out requests, and have heard back from some,” said Parsons. “If any church would like to participate that I didn’t contact, they should call.”

“We’re also still looking for teams and sponsors,” said Parsons. “Contact Sandra Meadows at 276-806-5488 or [email protected] You can call to start a team or just come to our next meeting at First Presbyterian Church July 26 at 6 p.m.”

Parsons said she has been involved with Relay since her daughter was in Girl Scouts.

“Over the years, I’ve helped with Relay. Then I was on the committee, and this year, I’m the chairperson. Numerous people in my family have had cancer. Some of them survived, and we lost some.”

“We want to help people. We want to promote research so we don’t have cancer anymore.”
