County served by many fire departments

While Mount Airy’s fire department has a long and rich history, it is far from the only fire department serving Surry County.

There are 19 departments throughout the county, most staffed entirely by volunteers. Mount Airy, and Elkin had fire departments early on. Residents came together in the wake of the tragic fire at Flat Rock Elementary School which took the lives of a student and a teacher and sent 14 to regional hospitals to raise the funds, staff, and train local departments across the county.

Beginning in 1958 and continuing for 30 years, 16 departments were formed.
