The Running Club at Jones Intermediate School recently culminated its year with a 5K run on the greenway in Mount Airy.
The students at Jones are able to pick a club to participate in throughout the year on specific club days. These clubs are designed to meet the interests and skills of all students. Some of the clubs offered include, yoga, kindness, recycling, Battle of the Books, gardening, Harry Potter, math, board games, and running.
This year the Running Club was led by Jessica Hall and Kristin Bullin. They were assisted by Michone Coleman and Amanda Robertson. The club planned a 5K to finish out the year. The students left school and were taken to Riverside Park to begin their run. In all, there were 35 student participants.
Volunteers and staff were able to run the course with the students and encourage them along the way. The club hopes to instill a love of running and healthy lifestyle choices in these young athletes, with plans to make this an annual event.
Winners were chosen based on times. For the boys division the top three finishers were Christopher Castillo- Rodriguez in first, Adrian Rodriguez second and Tylor Hammond third. For the girls division Carrie Marion claimed first, Isa Bowman took second and Sabrina Brown finished third.
