Dobson resident graduates from veterinary school

Kayla Marie Fowler of Dobson, the daughter of Sharon Coe Fowler and the late Frank Fowler, graduated on May 12 from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

The commencement and hooding ceremony was held in the James R. Cox Auditorium. Dr. Bobby Reed had the honor of placing the hood upon Dr. Fowler’s shoulders.

Fowler was recognized for membership in Phi Zeta, the National Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine.

Prior to graduation the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine Awards Banquet was held on May 11 at the Knoxville Marriott. Dr. James P. Thompson, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, welcomed the students and guests, while Merck and Company presented Fowler with an award for showing exceptional academic success.

She had the opportunity to practice with externships in Mount Airy, Charlotte, Southport, and Australia.

While attending Appalachian State University, where she received a BS degree in cell and molecular biology in 2014, Dr. Renfrow Hauser and Dr. Mark Hauser and the staff of Surry Animal Hospital welcomed her into the practice as a volunteer. There, she gained hands-on experience and guidance.

Attending the the weekend graduation and festivities at the University of Tennessee were her mother, brother Cory Fowler, friend Dr. Eric Shreves, professor and friend Dr. Bobby Reed, as well as her aunt and uncle, Linda Fowler Davis and Jack Davis.
