The 86th annual Coronation Ball of the Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards took place Saturday at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, honoring 12 young women. Among them was a Mount Airy resident.

Elizabeth Curtis Campbell, a student at The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Brown Campbell III, was among those recognized.

The debutantes and their escorts, families and members of the Brigade planned for an evening of pageantry including dinner, presentation ceremony and dancing.

The Brigade’s history dates to the Great Depression, having been formed in an attempt to draw more people and businesses to downtown Asheville. In its early years, the week before the coronation included parades, parties and other events.

The Brigade’s 86-year commitment to serving Western North Carolina continues through donations to women’s organizations of the debutante’s choosing.

This year, William Allen McCann Jr. was selected as king. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. William Allen McCann and a student at Washington and Lee University.

Spencer Caroline Strauss was selected queen. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Alexander Strauss and is a student at Auburn University
