The North Carolina Association of School Activities recently presented Surry County School System with the School District Cup for medium-sized school districts in the state.

The association presents scholastic competitions that promote intellectual achievement and excellence in North Carolina students. Scholastic competitions allow students the opportunity to excel in their areas of interest. Students participate in such events as MATHCOUNTS, Science Olympiad, Show Choir, Twelve, Robotics, Quiz Bowl, The Quill, Poetry Out Loud, National History Day, Art Showcase, Forensics, and Battle of the Books.

“In addition to our district conducting a variety of key contests, teachers and principals encourage students to participate in other state competitions that contribute to the NCSSM Challenge Cup or NCASA Scholastic Cup,” said Sonia Dickerson, spokesperson for the county schools. NCSSM refers to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

”We commend principals and teachers for encouraging students to participate in the competitions and congratulate the middle schools and high schools for participating in competitions that support scholastic activities,” she said.
