As of Friday, local residents using United Healthcare Medicare Advantage HMO or PFFS health care plans will be able to utilize hospital-affiliated physicians who are part of Northern Medical Group as “in network” doctors.

“We are delighted to offer a first-time ‘Hello’ or ‘Welcome back’ to patients who will be seen at our affiliated clinic practices and who have United Healthcare’s Medicare Advantage plan health-insurance coverage,” said Brian Beasley, vice president, clinic operations.

This latest agreement ends a more than three-year hiatus between Northern Medical Group and United Healthcare Medicare Advantage plans. On Dec. 31, 2014, those physicians lost that status, meaning local residents utilizing those healthcare plans would either have to pay more out of pocket to use Northern Medical Group doctors, or they had to go elsewhere to get the lower in-network rates negotiated by United Healthcare.

Northern Medical Group includes 30 primary-care and specialty physicians and providers based at eight practice sites or offices throughout the Mount Airy community. These clinics include: Northern Family Medicine, Northern Gastroenterology, Northern General Surgery, Northern Medical Specialists, Northern OB-GYN, Northern Orthopaedics, Northern Pain Management and Northern Urology.

In addition to contracting directly with United Healthcare, Northern Hospital and Northern Medical Group contract with most major insurance plans, as well as Medicare and Medicaid, the hospital said.

“We are proud of our ability to successfully develop and maintain contractual relationships with most major insurers so that Northern Hospital and its affiliated clinics may continue to provide patients throughout the region with access to high-quality, safe, and compassionate care,” said Beasley.
