A Surry County man, Carl Rodney Lee Hickson Jr., is being held without bond on a murder charge stemming from the stabbing of his brother Wednesday.
The incident at 109 Skyland Drive in the Pine Ridge area initially was reported as a shooting, which the Surry County Sheriff’s Office responded to shortly after 4 p.m., according to a release Thursday morning from Sheriff Jimmy Combs. That location is near the intersection of Pine Ridge and Red Brush roads.
Upon arriving, deputies located a male victim, unresponsive in the driveway of the home on Skyland Drive, where the brothers lived. After officers secured the scene, personnel with the Surry Emergency Medical Service arrived and pronounced that person deceased.
An investigation by county detectives determined the victim to be Eric James Hickson, 40, who had been stabbed multiple times. No evidence of a shooting was found.
Further investigation indicated that the incident stemmed from an argument between Hickson and his brother, Carl Rodney Lee Hickson Jr., 51.
While detectives were processing the scene and gathering information, deputies conducted an intense search of the perimeter and located Carl Hickson Jr. in a nearby wooded area.
Hickson was charged with murder and remains in the Surry County Detention Center under no bond.
“The investigation is still active and ongoing,” Combs said late Thursday morning.
“Officers are working to collect all evidence and organize the information in a manner to ensure a successful prosecution.”
Another local official said an autopsy was scheduled Thursday morning for the man who died.
At this point, Carl Hickson is charged only with murder, Capt. Lloyd Terry of Surry County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday, with no level of severity attached such as first- or second-degree, pending further evaluation.
“The district attorney will review our findings and set a degree,” Terry explained.
