Beginning in September, Surry Arts Council will offer a variety of dance classes for ages 2 and older.
“I am so excited for this,” said Shelby Coleman, director of Artistic and Educational Programs at the Surry Arts Council. “Ever since I started at the Surry Arts Council, I’ve been hoping to offer a comprehensive dance program.”
Dance is an integral part of Coleman’s life: “Even on days when I don’t have a class, I go into the studio and dance and it makes me feel better.”
Coleman graduated from Morehead State University with a Bachelor of Arts in theater with minors in dance and business. She is trained in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, West African, hip hop, ballroom, musical theatre, Afro-Brazilian, and fosse. Coleman was a member of the Morehead State University Dance Company, was a co-instructor while there, and has nearly a decade of dance instruction experience. She has choreographed, acted as dance captain, and starred as feature dancer in a host of productions.
In addition to touring with Missoula Children’s Theatre for two years, Coleman has worked as a teaching artist for Lexington Children’s Theatre and toured with The Little Company, an educational touring troupe.
“Dance is a wonderful thing for all young people,” she said. “It can help them learn basic balance and coordination, but it also challenges the brain. This translates to improved learning ability in many areas. Dance is great supplemental training for any sport from track to racket sports to football. Skills you learn in dance can be applied in all areas of your life.”
The Surry Arts Council dance classes offered will be Beginning Dance (ages 2-3), Ballet (ages 4-5, 6-8, and 9 and up), Tap (ages 4-5, 6-8, and 9 and up), Jazz/Hip Hop (ages 4-5, 6-8, and 9 and up), Lyrical (ages 9 and up), and Adult Styles.
Coleman notes that class size will be limited.
“It’s important to be able to give individual attention to each student,” she said.
