Ten alumni from the Mount Airy High School Class of 1948 recently attended their 70th reunion, one of whom was sporting his original wardrobe from graduation.
The group celebrated with lunch at Libby Hill Seafood Restaurant. Their class consisted of about 100 students who graduated in a ceremony at what was then the Rockford Street Auditorium and is now the Andy Griffith Playhouse.
Among the graduates was long-time News lifestyles editor Eleanor Powell-Hines, known by Greenwood in those days.
Class member James Hiatt attended the celebration wearing the same suit he had worn to the long-ago graduation and modeled it for his high school friends, telling them the suit had been purchased at the J.C. Penny store and presented to him by his parents.
Juanita McGee Daber, reunion chairman, checked out the store label inside Hiatt’s jacket lapel to determine its provenance. Finding it to be authentic, she commended him for keeping the suit in such excellent shape and offered Hiatt the highest of compliments.
”It still fits after all these years.”
