Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Inducts New Members

The Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Surry Community College recently inducted 20 new members for fall 2017/spring 2018. They are pictured with PTK faculty advisors and guest speakers after the recent induction ceremony. -

The Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Surry Community College held its annual induction ceremony for 20 new members for fall 2017/dpring 2018 in the Grand Hall of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology recently.

College President Dr. David Shockley provided opening remarks, and Dr. Dawn Worley, the college’s lead instructor of Business, Accounting and Management Information Systems, was the guest speaker who was selected by the PTK membership. In addition, one of the new inductees provided entertainment – Olivia Jessup gave a musical performance of “Vienna” by Billy Joel.

Kendra Wise, admissions and enrollment coordinator at Salem College, also attended to present PTK members with a special scholarship recognition. Wise explained that Salem College provides PTK members with up to $15,000 per year in scholarship money, which all inductees are now eligible for should they choose to pursue transfer opportunities at Salem.

The fall 2017/spring 2018 inductees are: Sonia Baldwin, Mount Airy; Erica Beam, Dobson; Kayla Brinegar, Mount Airy; Kendra Carter, Lawsonville; Maggie Ann Collins, Pilot Mountain; Kaitlyn Crews, Elkin; Timothy Gates, Cana, Va.; Sydney Gillespie, Lawsonville; Danielle House, Mount Airy; Olivia Jessup, Mount Airy; Rebecca Kreh, Dobson; Samantha Marion, Pinnacle; Afton Nelson, Elkin; Rose Phipps, Sparta; Angel Romero, Hamptonville; Amy Thompson, Dobson; Teresa Vasquez, Dobson; Sarah Katherine Wagoner, Boonville; and Lexia Wingler, Yadkinville.

PTK does campus service projects and participates in a college-wide service project each year. Most recently, the chapter coordinated with several other groups on campus and within the community to provide over 50 survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault with packages including much needed toiletry items, non-perishable food items and feminine hygiene products.
