WESTFIELD — Firefighters and their families came together at the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department station on Dec. 18 for their annual Christmas celebration and awards presentation.
After a holiday meal catered by Aunt Bea’s, awards were given out recognizing outstanding service during the previous year.
Westfield Fire Chief Jonathan Sutphin presented the 2017 Firefighter of the Year award to Jordan Smith. Shawn Brindle was then awarded the Junior Firefighter of the Year plaque.
Lieutenant Phil Sutphin presented Charlie Linville with a plaque recognizing Linville as Westfield VFD’s First Responder of the Year. Linville, a 23-year fire department veteran, is a multiple-time recipient of the prestigious recognition.
Phil Sutphin was then presented with a plaque recognizing his 40 years of service to the fire department and the Westfield community.
Each Westfield firefighter with at least 10 years of service was given an opportunity to speak, recognizing Phil Sutphin’s accomplishments as well as the personal inspiration provided to other department members and the challenge to young firefighters to meet his examples of service.
Afterwards, all in attendance received a surprise visit from Santa along with plenty of treats for everyone.
“This was a fun way to come together and celebrate a good year,” Jonathan Sutphin noted. “A lot of good things have been accomplished this year and there’s a lot more to come in the future for this fire department.”
