Senior Fun Day moves to new location

By Bill Colvard -

Senior Fun Day is the one time of year when all the fun is reserved for people 55 years of age and older. Or as Jane Surratt, manager of Surry County Senior Center, an event co-sponsor, says, “55 and better.”

Senior Fun Day has traditionally been held during the Surry County Fair but this year the free event is moving from the fairgrounds to Faith Baptist Church’s fellowship hall on Friday from noon until 2 p.m.

The new venue is larger and features air-conditioning which will make it more conducive to dancing, one of the most popular activities of Senior Fun Day, according to Surratt.

“Seniors will not have to walk so far, as far as parking. And they won’t have to fight traffic,” said Surratt. Handicapped parking is available and she said it’s a clean and safe environment.

Dennis Tolbert Band will be on hand to provide live entertainment. Tolbert is still remembered for this ’70s era band, “Brotherhood of Peace.”

“Dennis has been around since I was a girl,” said Surratt. “Everybody loves Dennis Tolbert Band,” she added. He plays some rock, some country, some beach music. She adds, “These ladies can do line dancing to just about anything,” speaking of a group who dance at the senior center regularly.

Surratt announced that this year for the first time, Senior Fun Day has been expanded to include a health fair. More than 20 vendors will be present with information on healthcare products and services that affect senior’s lives. Among them will be Mountain Valley Hospice, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation, Food Lion, Surry County Health and Nutrition and SHIIP (Seniors Health Insurance Information Program). Blood sugar and blood pressure screenings will be available. Food Lion will have water and snacks for participants.

Door prizes, refreshments and contests will be among the Fun Day activities. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to have their picture taken with Bob, of 109-U-Pull It commercial fame. “Seniors love this man,” said Surratt. There is talk of a contest for participants to sing the jingle, but Surratt isn’t sure if that will happen.

There are multiple door prizes, with the grand prize being a rocking chair donated by Brannock & Hiatt Furniture. It is necessary to be present to win door prizes orthe grand prize.

Senior Fun Day is from 12 — 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 and will be at Faith Baptist Church, 217 Faith Baptist Church Road, Mount Airy, in the fellowship hall. The church is located beside Franklin Elementary School. Signs will be posted or individuals may call the Senior Center at 336-786-6155 for further directions. The event is free.

Senior Fun Day is sponsored by YVEDDI Surry Senior Centers, Home Instead Senior Care, Mountain Valley Hospice, Mount Airy Parks and Recreation and Food Lion.
