STATE ROAD — A bridge contract is continuing in Surry County.
A contractor for the Department of Transportation has closed Mountain Park Road in Surry in order to replace a bridge over the South Fork Mitchell River.
The new bridge going in is the fifth in a 12-bridge contract with Smith-Rowe, LLC, of Mount Airy. The contract includes nine bridges in Surry County and three in Yadkin County for a total of $10.3 million.
A nine-mile detour around the construction in State Road township has been established with the route including Pat Nixon Road, Adams Ridge Road and Noah Hayes Road back to Mountain Park Road.
Construction on the new bridge — the old bridge was built in 1947 — is expected to be completed by May of 2017.
