Griffith easily wins re-election in Virginia

Republican Morgan Griffith, whose 9th District seat in the in the U.S. House of Representatives includes Cana, Virginia and the rest of Carroll County, defeated Democrat Derek Kitts and independent Janice Allen Boyd to hold onto his seat.

The three-term congressman easily outdistanced his opponents in Carroll County voting, nearly winning by a four-to-one margin. Griffith picked up 10,155 Carroll County votes, or 76 percent of the total votes cast. Kitts recorded 2,727 votes, while Boyd received 469 votes. There were 14 write-in ballots.

The win gives Griffith a fourth two-year term. Prior to running for the House in 2010, Morgan served in the Virginia House of Delegates for eight two-year terms. In the year 2000, he became the first Republican in the state’s history to hold the office of House Majority Leader.
