How has your quality of life been improved by Mount Airy’s greenway system, including its new connector (for which a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled next Friday)?
Well, I love it — it’s just a good place to get exercise. I ride a bicycle with other guys and we just fellowship together and enjoy a healthy activity. I think we’re blessed to have it (the greenway network).
It’s been wonderful, because I could never find an exercise I liked. I started riding a bike and I am out here every day. It’s great exercise and I meet some really good people.
We’re thankful for it — we both (including wife Regina) walk on the greenway every day of the week except Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. Today (Thursday) is my birthday — I turned 68 — and we’re walking the entire trail. (The Hills also like the "all-weather" aspect, with the Emily B. Taylor Greenway good during cooler periods when sunshine in an open space is welcome and the Ararat River Greenway is nice on hot days because of its shade.)
We (he and wife Cathy) just moved to the area about six months ago. We are retired, and after retiring I gained weight and also had Type II diabetes. Since riding a bike on the greenway I’ve got the weight down and I was taken off the medication and stuff. It’s benefiting my health, and the people you meet out here are friendly. It’s been a real pleasure for us.
