Surry Community College is offering several summer camps for children of various ages starting in July on the college’s campus at 630 S. Main Street, Dobson.
Surry Traditional Music Camp will be held July 25 through July 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for boys and girls ages 8 through 13. This camp is for children that are interested in singing, dancing, and playing a stringed musical instrument, and is appropriate primarily for beginners or those with some experience. The music will be based on traditional American and country music including the exploration of Surry County’s old-time music heritage known throughout the world. Each child will learn the basic playing techniques of one of the following instruments of his or her choice: guitar, fiddle, banjo, or mandolin. Additionally, each participant will learn to sing some traditional, old-time, and country songs as a group and receive instruction on flatfooting and square dancing. The week may also include performances and guest speakers. Participants should bring a heavy mid-morning snack and drink; lunch is not provided. The required registration fee of $50 includes instrument rental and a T-shirt. Seating is limited to the first 30 who register.
