Surry woman facing Va. drug charges

Staff Report

HILLSVILLE, Va. — Authorities in Carroll County, Virginia, have announced the arrest of a Mount Airy woman on multiple drug and weapons charges, who at last report was being held without bond.

The case involving Crystal Moreen Pettry, 35, listed as a resident of 1309 Linvllle Road, stems from a recent traffic check deputies with the Carroll Sheriff”s Office were conducting on Fancy Gap Highway at the intersection of Chances Creek Road.

At one point, officers observed a vehicle approach the checkpoint, stop in the roadway and then pull off to the side of the road. The car sat there for about a minute and deputies went to the vehicle to confront the driver.

That individual, later identified as Pettry, allegedly gave deputies a fake name and date of birth and claimed that she possessed a driver’s license, but did not have it with her at the time.

This prompted a search of the car and the area around it by deputies Joe Utt and Jake Worrell, who discovered a pink purse. A search of the purse revealed a .380-caliber pistol and a .22-caliber pistol.

A black bag inside the purse also was found to contain methamphetamines, marijuana, two pipes and a concealing device resembling a lighter which contained blue pills.

As a result of the Oct. 9 incident, Pettry was charged with possession of marijuana, giving false information to a law enforcement officer, possession of a Schedule IV drug, possession of a Schedule II drug, possession of a Schedule II drug while possessing a weapon and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.

Pettry was transported to a magistrate and later to the New River Valley Regional Jail, where she was confined without privilege of bond.
