A local man who was hurt in a single-vehicle wreck Wednesday has died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Ricky Joseph Goins, 51, of Mount Airy was injured Wednesday afternoon when the truck he was driving veered off of the road at 1458 Sparger Road. The truck struck a cattle fence, went airborne, rolled several times, and broke a utility pole. During the crash, Goins was ejected him from the vehicle. Goins, the only person in the truck, was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem shortly after the wreck.
He was unconscious when emergency services workers arrived on the scene and, at the time, Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said he was in critical condition. No details were available specifically on what injuries he may have suffered or the actual cause of death. Law enforcement estimated he was driving 70 to 80 mph at the time he wrecked, and he was not wearing a seat belt. They also reported he was suspected of being impaired.
While Goins’ vehicle did break a utility pole, EMS officials were not aware of any sort of power or other service interruption in the area.
