A Patrick County man charged with 11 felonies was arrested by Mount Airy Police Department officials recently.
Michael Timothy Puckett, 44, now faces additional charges for possession of methamphetamines and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to the police report Puckett also was in possession of a handgun at the time of his arrest.
Officials from the Patrick County Sheriff’s office stumbled upon a makeshift camp near Ararat, Virginia, on Sept. 11. According to a written statement from the department deputies found explosives, Molotov incendiary cocktails, a trip device capable of discharging a shotgun shell, an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition stockpiles at the camp.
Deputies charged Puckett with seven counts of manufacturing or possessing explosives, two counts of concealing stolen property and one count each of altering or obliterating a serial number on a firearm and possessing a sawed-off shotgun.
Warrants were issued for Puckett’s arrest and Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said his department was working closely with Surry County authorities to apprehend Puckett.
Puckett, who is listed as being homeless in the police report from his arrest, was known to spend time in Patrick and Carroll counties, Virginia, and Surry County, according to Smith.
The police report states that Puckett was taken into custody after Mount Airy Police Department officials spotted him on Fancy Gap Road near where the road intersects Quail Trail.
Puckett is being held at the Surry County Detention Center under a $4,000 secured bond. According to an official at the Surry County Detention Center there are three means by which Puckett could be extradited to Virginia to face the charges in that state.
The official said Puckett could voluntarily be extradited to Virginia, a judge could order him extradited or Patrick County authorities could seek a warrant signed by the governors of both states.
Puckett is scheduled to appear in court in Surry County on Oct. 1.
