DOBSON — Surry Community College will be holding orientation dates for the High School Equivalency program, or HSE, formerly known as GED, next week.
The HSE program allows students to earn a High School Equivalency diploma from the State Board of the North Carolina Community College System. The orientation dates are as follows: Monday, 1 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 5 to 9 p.m.; and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each orientation session will be held at Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. All sessions will be held in the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology.
Orientation is mandatory for new Adult Basic Education/HSE students and students returning after six months. Students need to attend only one orientation session. A student release form is required for all students 16- or 17-years if age and can be picked up at the main campus in Dobson, the college’s centers in Elkin, Pilot Mountain and Yadkinville, and the Jones Family Learning Center in Mount Airy. Contact one of the following staff members to advanced register for orientation: Jennifer Pardue at 336-386-3674, Nichole Shores at 336-386-3441, or Mary White at 336-386-3261.
The HSE test is computer-based, but paper testing is available as an accommodation. The test has four content areas: Reasoning through Language Arts (150 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes), Science (90 minutes) and Social Studies (90 minutes). Scores do not carry over for students who have not completed the series of tests from 2002. The test is offered in English and Spanish.
Students will have three opportunities to test per content area. The cost to students is $20 per test for a total of $80 for the entire series. Upon attaining minimum standard scores of 150 on each of the four tests a High School Equivalency diploma is awarded to the student by the North Carolina State Board of the Community College System. Books, materials and instruction are provided free of charge.
Students can prepare for the HSE test anywhere they have Internet access. Anyone who completes the HSE orientation is a candidate for the HSE online class. Once a student has completed orientation, a minimum of 12 hours a month is required of each student. For more information, contact Jennifer Pardue at 336-386-3674 or email@example.com.
