A man was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem Wednesday after his truck ran off the road at 1458 Sparger Road, Mount Airy, according to a local official.

The man, who Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton described as being in his “late 50s or early 60s,” was in critical condition when airlifted from the scene. Shelton said the Chevrolet pickup had veered off the road, hit a cattle fence and broken a telephone pole.

Shelton said the truck apparently rolled several times, and the man was ejected from the vehicle. The call to respond to the accident was received at 4:19 p.m. on Wednesday.

The emergency services official was not aware of any service interruptions due to the downed pole.

Shelton could not identify the man and deferred further questions to state troopers who were investigating the accident.

The two N.C. Highway Patrol officers on the scene were not immediately available for an comment.
