This photograph by Ken Tippette, taken during a May bike tour in the Pilot Mountain area, was one of four winners in a first-ever N.C. Department of Transportation contest.

RALEIGH — The scenic beauty of Pilot Knob and the sport of cycling have proven to be a winning combination in a statewide photography contest.

A photo by Ken Tippette, taken in May on River Siloam Road in Surry County, was picked as one of four winning scenes in the competition sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

“This is the first year we’ve done it,” Sarah McCue, a DOT spokesperson, said Tuesday of the contest that was launched in conjunction with National Bike Month in May.

The state agency celebrated that occasion by encouraging North Carolinians to get outside and enjoy the vast amount of cycling activities the state has to offer.

Among the activities in that regard was the inaugural Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Division cycling photo contest.

It attracted around 50 entries from about 25 different photographers, with the four winners chosen based on the shots’ content and focus on cycling in North Carolina.

The photo taken by Tippette in Surry County was captured during a multi-day bicycle tour near Pilot Mountain, with the knob looming in the background.

Winners received a custom bike jersey along with other safety materials.

The other three winners were:

• Mike Thomas, who took a photo of a wounded veteran at Fort Bragg out for a ride.

• Holly White, who shared a photo of the Outer Banks Silver Ridge Riders accompanying Nags Head Elementary School students to school on Bike to School Day on May 6.

• Scott Yamanashi, who submitted a photo of the Plaza-Midwood Tuesday Night Ride, featuring a group of cyclists of varying experience, who meet weekly.

The photographs can be viewed at, with McCue saying that for now they are accessible online only.

But in the future the photos will be displayed in additional places, the DOT representative added.
