Light shines in the darkness

Jesus instructed His followers in Matthew 5:14-16:

14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men; that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

With a deep love and concern for our nation on this Friday before Super Tuesday II, there are at least five ways that the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ can be “light” in our society.

One. As light, we will humble ourselves and declare before God and one another our absolute dependency upon Him, Who is able to turn this nation around! It was by the divine providence of Almighty God that the United States of America was raised up! And God alone has the answer for our struggling nation.

Two. As light, we will choose righteousness and take a stand for righteousness, individually and as a Church. Some are silenced by the so-called term: “separation of church and state.” The fact is, The United States Constitution says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof!” The Church, which is made up of individual Christians, is absolutely free to become involved in the government and governmental decisions! The Church is absolutely free to take a stand for righteousness, publicly and vocally. The Church is absolutely free to speak out on moral issues and matters that concern our society. The Church must not be silent! Rather, we must speak truth, which dispels deception.

Three. As light, we will recognize our battle is spiritual. “Our battle is not against flesh and blood.” The democrats are not the enemy! The republicans are not the enemy! The independents are not the enemy! The media are not the enemy! Our battle is spiritual, “against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:12) Evil forces desire to destroy this nation with an anti-God, anti-family, anti-life agenda, and this spiritual force is influencing party platforms and political candidates.

Four. As light, we will pray. God clearly says that prayer for the nation is the responsibility of His people. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” We must pray for those in authority. We must pray for God to raise up righteous leaders. We must pray for God to give us a righteous President, Congressmen, Senators, state and local leaders, whose hearts are turned toward God! We must pray for the Church to clearly hear God’s voice.

Five. As light, we will become informed voters, and then we will go to the poles and vote! We will also get involved in the political process as God leads! Edmund Burke, an 18th century political thinker and orator, perhaps stated it best in his popular quote: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing!”

Let this not be said of the Church of Jesus Christ.
