Light, in the midst of darkness

It seems darkness is all around us. Deception. Evil. Lying. Immorality. Hate. Murder. Selfishness. Sin. It has been so since the Garden of Eden. So many walk in darkness.

But there is Good News. Jesus Christ announced in John 8:12: “I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Jesus Christ came into our world as The Light! And the darkness could not put out that Light! Oh, they tried, but it was impossible! The religious leaders tried! The government tried! John 1 says of Jesus: “In Him is Light; and the Light is the Light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” In other words, the darkness could not overcome it! (John 1:45)

Then on the night of His resurrection, Jesus told His disciples who were meeting in the Upper Room: “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21) Jesus was saying to His followers: “As the Father sent Me to be a Light in the world, now I am sending you to be a light in your world.”

Secular progressives prefer that Christians keep their Christianity within the four walls of the church. That is contrary to what Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

While some Christians try to avoid any interaction with the world in darkness, Jesus said in John 17:15: “I do not pray that you take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one.” Christians are not supposed to withdraw from society! Rather, we are to be involved enough to be a light in the darkness! We don’t simply stand back and curse the darkness! We don’t just complain about the darkness! We don’t just criticize the darkness! Rather, we light a match! We turn on a flashlight! We beam a flood light by taking the light of Jesus Christ into the different segments of our society.

Light must literally invade the darkness. Light must invade our government. Christians are to rise up, get involved and speak out! The truth is the same for all people, at all times, in all places; God’s Word is truth! And Christians must stand on truth and proclaim truth, even when it is not politically correct! Light must invade our political system! We need Christian men and women to fill local, state and national offices! Light must invade the court system, the prison system, the school system, and the media! Light must invade the work place, the recreational place, and the home place! Light must invade Hollywood and the entertainment industry!

A perfect example of light invading darkness is the work of Alex and Stephen Kendrick, director and producer of the movies: “Fireproof,” “Courageous” and “War Room.” While many Hollywood movies in our society are depictions of the darkest areas of our society, these Christian films beautifully reflect the Light of Jesus Christ! And everywhere the films are shown, darkness flees! These professionals accepted Jesus’ challenge and that challenge is for all Christians: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Mt. 5:16)
